Valknut
Formed by three interlocking triangles. The word Valknut combines the terms valr and knut, meaning “fallen warrior” and “knot.”
Based on where it has been found, it is thought to be linked to battle and death, and is associated with Odin, the god of death. It is also known as the “heart of Hrungnir,” after the giant Hrungnir in Norse mythology.
Triquetra
The name Triquetra comes from the Latin “tri-ket-ra,” which translates to “three-cornered.” The number three is the most sacred for both Celtic and Christian cultures, symbolizing perfection and balance. Despite its Indo-European origin, it has had various interpretations over the centuries and has appeared in the symbolism of Viking, Celtic, and Roman peoples, found primarily on Celtic stelae, Viking runes, and Roman pots and vessels (some theories suggest these were made by Celtic slaves). This symbol consists of three pointed ovals joined at one end and surrounded by a closed circle, though variations exist, like the Viking Valknut.
Vegvísir
The Viking compass helped Vikings navigate. According to legend, it was inscribed on Viking ships to ensure their safe return home.
Its depiction is known from a 17th-century Icelandic manuscript called Galdrabók. This symbol resembles another significant Viking symbol, the aegishjalmur, and has recently become popular as a tattoo symbolizing a straight path and not losing one’s way in life.
Aegishjalmur or Helm of Awe
Also known as the Helm of Awe. This symbol was used by Viking warriors to offer individual protection. It was said to be worn on the forehead, like a third eye, to grant invincibility and instill fear. This symbol also appears in the Galdrabók and is currently used among followers of the Norse neopagan religion Ásatrú, which venerates Asa and Vanir, as well as spirits of nature, ancestors, and the earth.
The Black Sun
The Black Sun is an ancient symbol of the Germanic and Aryan peoples, representing the end of the world, Ragnarök. It consists of two concentric circles, one external and a smaller inner one, shaped like a sun with twelve rays or lines that twist upon reaching the outer circle.
