Materials needed for henna dyeing:

You will need gloves, a disposable cap, and light henna powder (everything comes in the box).

Additionally, you will need a glass bowl (no metal), a plastic spatula for mixing, hot water (preferably bottled), and a dyeing brush. You will also need a towel and a hair dryer.

For extra highlights, add lemon juice or chamomile infusion.

How to use henna:

Preparation:

  1. Place the henna in a non-metallic bowl, using gloves to avoid stains.
  2. Slowly add hot water while mixing until you get a smooth paste. You can add lemon or chamomile if desired.
  3. Wait for the mixture to cool down to a warm temperature before applying.

Application:

Tip: First, apply moisturizing cream around your face, ears, and neck to protect your skin from stains.

On dry hair, apply the paste by massaging the scalp and thoroughly covering all the roots. Continue to the tips if applying to the entire hair. If dyeing dreads, it’s the same, just apply carefully to each dread, soaking it well, and make sure the dye penetrates the entire hair inside the dread, not just the surface layer. The process is the same as with loose hair.

Once everything is covered, massage the scalp well.

If you’ve only retouched the roots: wear the cap with your hair or dreads gathered in a low ponytail.

If you’ve dyed all your hair: gather it in an updo and wear the cap.

If the cap moves, you can secure it with plastic wrap.

Clean off any skin stains now.

Let it sit for 2 to 3 hours.

Rinsing:

Rinse with warm water until most of the paste (like mud) is gone, then wash with your shampoo (if you have dreads, your shampoo should be this one from Dr. Bronner's). Massage the scalp for a minute, and finally rinse with warm water until almost no color comes out of the water.

Ingredients: Cassia Obovata, Lawsonia Inermis, Sodium Picramate

Quantity: 100 grams. Sufficient for most hair types or dreadlocks (up to mid-back, for longer hair you’ll need one and a half or two packs).

If you’re only retouching roots, use about 25 grams.

Here’s a link to a YouTube tutorial by a lovely girl who explains everything, and when I get the chance, I’ll record a dreadlock tutorial. But remember, the process is exactly the same, just make sure to soak each dread carefully, rubbing piece by piece to let the dye penetrate the inside of the dread as much as possible, not just the surface hair.
